Commentary

It was a thoroughly convincing performance from New Zealand to take. 1-0 lead in the 4 match series. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell was just too good for the English bowlers. They are the world champions and will be disappointed after this victory. A comeback is definitely on the cards but this series is not about the result but more about the preparations for the impending World Cup. Tom Latham (New Zealand captain): it was outstanding. We necessarily got the wickets upfront. Little bit crucial times to break partnership. Then a partnership of 180. The way Daryl played was outstanding. Towards the end the way he finished it off was great. I think when Rachin came on he realised the wicket was a bit slow. He got some crucial wickets. Used the boundaries well. The score was just above par but the partnership was exceptional. The opening partnership set the foundation. They absorbed a little bit of pressure. The longer they went, they were able to put the foot down a little bit. Hats off to those two guys. Yeah at times, we can't look too far ahead. We will give guys an opportunity throughout the series.

Jos Buttler (England captain): Disappointing. At the halfway I felt we had a pretty good score. I thought it was a good toss to lose but credit to them for that partnership. They didn't allow us to come back into the game. We tried most things. We were stringing together a few good overs but then Daryl Michell played some great shots. Tried to bring the field in but nothing worked. But I thought our score was just over par. I think the way the schedule is, we have to look after a few guys. We will give opportunities as well but it's also important to win. We will hope to come back strongly.

Devon Conway (Man of the Match) - Happy to spend time in the middle and good to get a win. Just above par and credit to the bowlers for restricting them to a on that wicket. For us as a batting group, the focus is all about building partnerships. The nice thing about ODI Cricket is that we have a lot of time. When you play so much short-form cricket, you always feel the pressure to score runs. I have always enjoyed batting with Daryl. He struck the ball really well and long it may continue

Devon Conway goes down the ground and all the way for a maximum. They have walloped England in the 1st ODI and they look a very good in this format. What a pleasing performance. They didn't start well in the T20 series but have got off to an ideal start in the ODI series.

That was a clinical performance from New Zealand as they crushed England by 8 wickets with more than 4 overs to spare to take a 1-0 lead in the 4-match series. Powered by twin centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway, New Zealand made the target 292 look ridiculously easy, as they romped home with 26 deliveries to spare. New Zealand were always in front with the eight ball after the openers Will Young and Devon Conway got them off to a flying start.

A quickfire partnership of 61 runs came in a shade over 10 overs but the platform was set for the middle order to do the job for the Kiwis. Young struck some delectable shots during his knock of 29 which included 5 fours. Henry Nicholls also steadied the ship and tried to take the game deep. Conway who took his time initially, batted brilliantly as the innings progressed. It was a perfect ODI innings which had everything in it.

After the departure of Nicholls, it was Daryl Mitchell who didn't allow the pressure to build. He came out with intent which didn't allow Conway to lose the plot. Mitchell was severe against the spinners. Adil Rashid was at the receiving end of a scathing attack. His unbeaten knock of 118 came in a mere 91 deliveries which included 7 fours and as many sixes. On the other hand, Conway remained unbeaten on 111 off 121 deliveries. The only wicket-takers for England were David Willey and Adil Rashid.
