Commentary

We now come to the end of our coverage of the first of five ODIs between these two sides. Australia take the spoils at Trent Bridge thanks to a clinical batting performance, led by the maverick named Travis Head, steadily supported by 'all-rounder' Marnus Labuschagne. Both sides will now be heading up north - the second ODI will take place at Leeds on Saturday. Mitchell Marsh, Australia captain: Very happy. Was a great win, specially after the start England got and the way we pulled it back, especially after a man down, was a pretty quick last 20 overs for us, but yeah, a grand win. I'd love to take credit for it (bringing Marnus into the attack) it was a forced change, the longer the innings went on, we felt pace off was the better option. The guys around made those decisions and went with it. I thought the way we bowled, specially our part-timers was fantastic. Probably just the calmness of the group, got a couple of injuries and bit of illness around, that's the way it goes. We just want to stay consistent with how we want to play, the personnel, and hope we keep winning.

Harry Brook, England captain: We did everything we said we were going to do, go out there, try and score quickly and put pressure on the bowlers, we tried taking wickets when we came out to bowl. Wasn't our day today, hopefully it can be next game. We were eyeing a big score. Was difficult against the spinners, bit of hold in the pitch. Didn't rotate strike as well as we wanted, and we ended up getting a below-par score at the end. Them two played really well, felt good out there myself as well. Will take the positives, Rash bowled nicely, few others bowled nicely too. Hope we can carry on the momentum.

Travis Head (Man of the Match) - I was lucky at the start and if I get through the first phase, there is a lot of runs here, so capitalised on it. Felt like we batted and grind. Exceptional job to restrict them to 315. The partnership with Marnus was fantastic. The environment you can say they put a blueprint and I have that. I enjoy what I am doing and it's coming off well

As was expected from him, Travis Head got away with a few plays and misses against the new ball, and gradually went after the ones marginally loose in either line or length. Both Jofra Archer and Matthew Potts posed questions early on, beating the bat of Head and Mitchell Marsh several times. Marsh looked to break free, smoking a couple of wide deliveries to the fence, but the Australian skipper fell in the fourth over, having been rushed by a short ball from Potts.

Travis Head got in on the act. He and Steven Smith proceeded to make the most of the powerplay, literally smashing the shine off the white Kookaburra. Both Archer and Potts had their figures spoiled as Australia finished with 69 in the first ten overs. Brook's decision to turn to spin stemmed the flow of runs momentarily as Jacks and Rashid produced a couple of quiet overs on the trot after the powerplay.

Having seen turn and bounce on offer, Brook brought Liam Livingstone on, and the move worked. Smith, trying to work one into the leg side against the spin, handed a return catch to Livingstone. Australia, though, kept motoring along thanks to Travis Head - the odd boundary came about every over as Head, past his half-century by then, proceeded to navigate Australia ahead.

Cameron Green played himself in nicely at the other end. The tall all-rounder played second fiddle to Head, stitching a 50-run stand for the 3rd wicket with the left-handed opener. Jacob Bethell broke the stand, going right past Cameron Green's attempt to cut a low, straight delivery. Marnus Labuschagne joined Head in the middle, and settled into playing the role of second fiddle nicely as Head reached his hundred.

Having reached three figures, Head went up a gear or two, smashing four boundaries off one Brydon Carse over. Marnus Labuschagne got in on the act soon after - he went after Liam Livingstone in the latter's sixth over, taking 17 off it and bringing the required rate down to five. The white Kookaburra experience quite a lot of air time in the next few overs as Labuschagne and Head went on the charge, smashing England's spinners out the ground at will.

With plenty of time to spare, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne proceeded to navigate Australia home against a team in blue - once again, Head staying in the middle till the end this time. Stick around for the presentations...
