Liam Lawson is a New Zealand racing driver who competes in the Formula One championship for Racing Bulls. In February 2019, he joined the Red Bull Junior Team and MP Motorsport to compete in the FIA Formula 3 Championship. On 15 January 2021, it was announced that Lawson would compete in the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship. His first year in the Formula 2 Championship saw Lawson finish ninth in the overall standings at the end of the season. In 2022, Lawson announced that he would race for Carlin in the Formula 2 Championship and finished third in the driver’s championship with 149 points, with four wins and six podiums.

After joining the Red Bull Junior Team in 2019, Lawson first experienced an F1 car at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed, driving the 2011 Red Bull RB7. His actual Formula One debut came in at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, driving for AlphaTauri, substituting for Daniel Ricciardo, and finishing in 13th place. Later, Lawson raced at the 2023 Italian Grand Prix for AlphaTauri and finished in 11th place. In the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix, Lawson finished 12th, and after a rough Qatar Grand Prix, Lawson returned to his role as a reserve driver for Red Bull Racing and RB Formula One Team (previously known as AlphaTauri) in 2024. In 2024, Lawson replaced Ricciardo for the remaining six rounds of the 2024 Formula One season. However, Lawson finished 21st in the standings, earning just four points across the six Grand Prix.

Liam Lawson's Contract for 2025

On December 18, 2024, Red Bull Racing announced that Sergio Perez would leave the team after the end of the 2024 season and later confirmed that Liam Lawson would be driving in place of Sergio Perez. Perez announced that he would be leaving Red Bull Racing immediately, despite having two years left on his contract with the team, as per Formula 1's official website.

Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda were the two shortlisted drivers hoping to carry the torch for RB Racing. Ultimately, Lawson got selected for his good consistent performance back when he was substituting for Daniel Ricciardo. Although, Lawson was demoted from Red Bull Racing to Racing Bulls team due to his poor performances in Australia and China. Yuki Tsunoda has replaced Lawson for Red Bull Racing partnering Max Verstappen.
