AEW Dynamite: 5 Biggest news stories - MJF vs Chris Jericho teased, New TNT Champion crowned (October 7, 2020)

From a Dog Collar Match between Cody and Brodie Lee to the FTW Championship being defended at the beginning of the show, this week's edition of AEW Dynamite featured many contrasting moments.

Although this particular episode as a whole was pretty engaging from start-to-finish, fans were divided over some aspects of the show, especially when it came to the main event. Last night's episode was mostly advertised around the TNT Title Match and Chris Jericho's 30th-anniversary celebration in the pro wrestling industry.

#5: Taz offered Will Hobbs to join 'Team Taz' alongside Brian Cage and Ricky Starks on AEW Dynamite

The FTW Championship was defended by Brian Cage against young Will Hobbs to kick-off this week's episode of AEW Dynamite.

Will Hobbs has been nothing short of impressive ever since he got signed as an AEW Superstar. Hobbs and Cage fought each other in a back-and-forth contest, and the match was surprisingly fast-paced, with a lot of athletic maneuvers being displayed from both men.

It's not often that viewers get to see two heavyweights moving around the ring at a brisk pace, that too without any difficulty.

Towards the end, Cage dodged a Frog Splash from Hobbs, and the FTW Champion retained by hitting a Powerslam for the win.

After the match, Ricky Starks and Brian Cage cornered Will Hobbs. Taz offered Hobbs to join his crew, and if Hobbs were to refuse, he would get beat up at the hands of Starks and Cage.

Before Hobbs could decide, Darby Allin arrived to save him and drove Taz's crew out of the ring. As a whole, the opening match/segment set a good precedent for the rest of this episode.

#4: FTR received a tag team titles challenge from Best Friends for next week's AEW Dynamite

FTR faced The Hybrid 2 (Jack Evans and Angelico) in a tag team match after the hard-hitting opener between Will Hobbs and Brian Cage on AEW Dynamite.

This was a fine bout as a whole, but it will mostly be remembered for an obvious botch and the post-match events that followed. The botch occurred when Jack Evans missed a corkscrew from the top rope.

Towards the end, FTR picked up the victory after delivering a Superplex-Frog Splash combo. It was noted on commentary that the finish might have been a shot against The Young Bucks, who were watching this match from the backstage area.

Matt and Nick Jackson super-kicked the cameraman who was filming them backstage. The Bucks didn't like being 'spied on' in this case. Matt and Nick Jackson joked about the amount of fine they would have to pay Tony Khan this time around.

Clearly, a match between FTR and The Young Bucks will be happening sooner rather than later. Their clash could happen at AEW Full Gear as well.

Best Friends arrived after last night's match and announced they would be facing FTR next week for the AEW Tag Team Titles since they are the number one contenders right now. FTR will probably retain to build up to their eventual clash against The Young Bucks.

#3: Chris Jericho received several wishes from his pro wrestling and celebrity friends before taking part in a highly-divisive AEW main event

Chris Jericho teamed up with Jake Hager to face Luther and Serpentico in the main event of this week's AEW Dynamite.

Before the match could take place, AEW aired several videos of pro wrestling names and non-wrestling celebrities wishing Chris Jericho on completing 30 years in the pro wrestling business.

The shout-outs came from names like Slash, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Lance Storm, Steel Panther, Gabriel Iglesias, and Chavo Guerrero, Eli Roth, Lars Ulrich, Kevin Smith, Don Callis, and Chris Jericho's dad, among others.

The main event contest could have been better. Jericho may have wanted to face his old friend, Luther, as a good gesture. But Luther looked nervous and out of sorts while executing several spots during this match.

The rest of the participants did a relatively good job of putting on a cohesive match. Chris Jericho picked up the victory for his team after successfully executing a Judas Effect on Luther.

It's tough for AEW stars to wrestle in an arena where the heat and humidity result in exhaustion. Still, Luther might not have been the best opponent for Jericho's 30-year anniversary celebration on AEW Dynamite.

#2: MJF interrupted Chris Jericho's celebration on AEW Dynamite as a future clash was teased between both of them

After this week's AEW main event, Chris Jericho thanked the fans on the microphone, and MJF (w/ Wardlow) interrupted his speech.

MJF has been teasing to join The Inner Circle for a while now. At the same time, Jericho and MJF are probably being cordial to each other despite not being the best of friends.

MJF and Jericho's segment fared better, unlike the match that preceded their face-off in the ring. MJF gifted a live-action clown as well as a portrait celebrating himself to Chris Jericho on the latter's celebratory night.

Le Champion didn't appreciate MJF's selfish gestures and smashed the portrait frame on the clown's head before taking him out with the Judas Effect. After a few seconds of staring down each other, MJF and Jericho swerved everyone and made up as friends.

It looks like AEW fans will have to wait to see MJF turning on Jericho (or vice versa), but it will most likely occur sometime down the road, perhaps even before AEW Full Gear.

The night ended with the AEW roster coming out and celebrating with Chris Jericho in a Saturday Night Live style parody.

#1: Cody became the new TNT Champion in a Dog Collar Match that turned into a bloodbath on AEW Dynamite

Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine joined the AEW audience for Brodie Lee and Cody's TNT Title Clash. Hardcore fans may remember that the legendary Intercontinental Champion faced Roddy Piper in the first Dog Collar Match back in 1993.

Cody and Brodie Lee's bloody fight was somewhat reminiscent of Valentine's classic match against Piper, but AEW's first-ever Dog Collar Match will go down as a classic in its own right.

The final shot of Cody wrapping the chain around Brodie's head was a brutal image. The Exalted One certainly put on a good fight since it took more than one Cross Rhodes to defeat the leader of the Dark Order.

Some fans didn't like the fact that Cody became the TNT Champion once again. But the man truly deserves it and he has been putting on great matches in recent memory. Cody's victory came at the expense of Brodie Lee's title reign, but the latter didn't look weak in any way after losing to the American Nightmare.

Cody announced that the TNT Title will be defended next week, and it was Orange Cassidy who answered the challenge right away on last night's AEW Dynamite.
