The Minnesota Lynx fended off a gritty New York Liberty team missing Breanna Stewart to hold on to a 100-93 win on Wednesday. Minnesota looked ready to cruise to a win midway through the fourth quarter before New York gave the home team a scare. Natisha Hiedeman scored eight points in the final frame while Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride delivered key baskets.

Liberty All-Star guard Sabrina Ionescu finished with a game-high 31 points, five rebounds and four assists. Four other players hit double-digit scoring, but Stewart's absence was too much to overcome against the WNBA's best defense.

New York Liberty vs Minnesota Lynx Game Summary

The New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx faced each other on Wednesday, the first time the two teams met since the 2024 WNBA Finals. The defending champs looked to end a two-game losing slide heading into Minneapolis. Without two-time MVP Breanna Stewart (leg), the Liberty hoped to pull off an upset against the team with the best record in the league.

Even without Stewart, the Liberty-Lynx first-quarter encounter lived up to the hype. New York led most of the way behind Marine Johannes, who took over Stewart's starting forward spot. A late surge engineered by Kayla McBride and Jessica Shepard allowed the home team to tie the game 24-24 after 10 minutes.

Minnesota's top-ranked defense started to bare its teeth in the second frame, while Napheesa Collier demonstrated why she is the favorite for MVP this season. She scored 13 points and anchored a defense that limited the visiting team to 18 points. The Lynx entered the halftime break with a 51-42 advantage.

The Liberty turned the third quarter into a defensive slugfest. After giving up 51 points in the first half, New York held the home team to 17. Minnesota's defense wasn't shoddy, either, allowing just 20 to the visitors to lead 68-62 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Lynx threatened to blow the game open in the fourth quarter behind a balanced attack led by Natisha Hiedeman and Napheesa Collier. Minnesota led 86-71 halfway through the period after Collier scored a layup.

The New York Liberty battled back to cut the advantage to 92-88 after an Isabelle Harrison bucket. Collier and Courtney Williams answered with four straight points before the Minnesota Lynx held on to a 100-93 win.
