The Atlanta Dream shrugged off a poor first half to beat the injury-riddled Golden State Valkyries 79-63 on Sunday. Atlanta's stuttering start allowed Golden State to tie the game 25-25 at halftime. The Dream regrouped to dominate the last two quarters for a comfortable win on the road.

The Dream starters, who scored only eight points in the first half, found their groove in the second. Brionna Jones put up 13 points, nine rebounds and two assists while Rhyne Howard contributed 14 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Veronica Burton led the resilient Valkyries with 16 points, five assists and two steals. Golden State managed to keep the game close in the first half by dragging the Dream to a grind-out back-and-forth. Once Atlanta found its rhythm on offense, the Valkyries' injury-plagued roster could not keep up.

Atlanta Dream vs Golden State Valkyries Game Summary

The Atlanta Dream opened a two-game West Coast swing on Sunday with a showdown against the Golden State Valkyries in the Bay Area. Atlanta, which lost at home 77-75 to Golden State late last month, hoped to get some payback.

The Dream-Valkyries' clash stuttered in the opening minutes. Both struggled to make baskets before the home team grabbed a 15-12 lead.

The second quarter followed the same script. Atlanta's starters combined for eight points in the first half. Brittney Griner, Te-Hina Paopao and Nia Coffey helped keep the team afloat off the bench with 17 points.

Meanwhile, the Valkyries' balanced attack enabled them to tie the visitors 25-25 at halftime. Janelle Salaun and Veronica Burton combined for 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the hosts.

After scoring just 25 points in the first half, the Dream tallied 28 in the third quarter alone. All-Star guard Allisha Gray led the charge with 14 points. Atlanta's defense held Golden State to 5-for-16 shooting, including 0-for-6 from deep, to enter the fourth frame with a 53-42 advantage.

Atlanta kept its foot on the gas to lead 68-50 midway through the last quarter. The barrage continued until the visitors pushed their advantage to 79-57 after Rhyne Howard hit a floater. Dream coach Karl Smesko removed her starters, but the team still cruised to a comfortable 79-63 win.
