Ben Johnson developed a reputation for being an innovative coach during his stint as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Johnson served in the role from 2022-24 and oversaw one of the most potent offenses in the NFL.
He was rewarded with the head coaching job at the Chicago Bears. While his departure was painful for Lions fans, running back David Montgomery does not see it as a huge loss for the team.
On "The Pivot Podcast" on Wednesday, Montgomery praised Johnson for elevating the Lions offense, but expressed faith in new OC John Morton.

“I think naturally just having a different person, you are going to have like these small minute things change but Johnny Mo is completely different from Ben,” Montgomery said [Timestamp - 3:30]
“You know I love Ben. Ben was incredible. He's going to do great things in Chicago. But I think Johnny Mo's damn good too. So I'm kind of excited to see how it all will shake out. But if it shakes out the way that I think, it'll be good."
Jared Goff high on new Lions OC John Morton ahead of 2025 season
Morton has big shoes to fill this season after Ben Johnson developed the Lions into the No. 1-ranked offense in the NFL.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff mentioned last month that Morton was extremely swift with the transition and ensured that not much changed for the team.
“Some of the stuff's new, but I don't think it's any bit abnormal from every other team adding new stuff. That's kind of what we're doing, and it's been a good process,” Goff said, per ESPN.
This season, the team will look to get past the NFC championship and make a Super Bowl appearance.
