For the second consecutive year, the NFL hosted a game in São Paulo, Brazil. This time, the Kansas City Chiefs faced the Los Angeles Chargers in a clash of AFC West contenders on Friday.

Los Angeles Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs summary

The game began with the Chargers forcing a punt from the Chiefs on the opening drive and responding with a Justin Herbert touchdown to Quentin Johnston. Both teams then exchanged punts on the next three drives, a stretch that Cameron Dicker ended with a 39-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

The Chiefs finally entered enemy territory on their first drive of the second quarter and turned it into a 35-yard field goal by Harrison Butker 16 plays later. Dicker answered with a 36-yarder with 45 seconds left after Omarion Hampton prematurely ended a presumed run for a first down.

A deep pass by Patrick Mahomes to Tyquan Thornton gave the Chiefs a chance to try to reduce the gap. Penalties threatened to kill their drive, but Butker managed to hit a 59-yarder just as the clock ran out to reduce the Chargers' halftime lead to 13-6.

The second half began the same way as the first, with a punt. This time, it was the Chiefs’ turn to take advantage, making their first third-down conversions of the game, then scoring via a Patrick Mahomes rush, only for Butker to shank the extra point attempt wide right.

The Chargers then burned much of the clock before Herbert found Keenan Allen in the endzone for six with just over half a minute left. Mahomes responded by finding Travis Kelce wide open for a touchdown; however, he failed to connect with Noah Gray for two.

After that, Herbert and Johnston connected again for another touchdown. Mahomes responded by finding Marquise “Hollywood” Brown way deep to reach the red zone, but three straight incompletions forced the Chiefs to settle for a field goal.

The Chiefs defense then failed to stop Herbert and company from breaching the 50 on the next drive, ending the game.
