Born in San Ramon, California, United States on September 17, 1997, Matthews grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. He played both baseball and hockey as a child but chose hockey after watching the Phoenix Coyotes. He played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (USNTDP) and Swiss team ZSC Lions before being drafted first overall by the Maple Leafs in 2016.
