He went to Presbyterian Christian School and had a pretty stellar amateur career, as he reached the U.S. Junior Amateur finals twice, coming in line with Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. He represented America in the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup and helped defeat the European team with a score of 16-8.

In 2015, USA Today named him the All-USA Boys Golf Player of the Year, and he enrolled at Alabama University. There, he was a Second Team All-SEC and played in the 2018 Palmer Cup.

He earned his PGA Tour card by ranking ninth in the points standings for the combined 2020–21 Korn Ferry Tour season. Riley shared a dorm on the Korn Ferry Tour with Will Zalatoris, who beat him in the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur final.

Riley missed the cut at the U.S. Open in both 2015 and 2020, despite having qualified twice. He and his partner Nick Hardy won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April 2023, giving Riley his first PGA Tour victory.
