Marcus Freeman has been the head coach for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish since 2021. He was a linebacker for Ohio State from 2004–2008. He began his college football career with the Buckeyes and helped them win four Big Ten championships, appeared in several BCS bowl games, and also won the national championships twice. In 2008, Freeman received second-team All-Big Ten honors as well. Freeman graduated from the Ohio State University with a Master's degree in Sports Management in 2011. His successful collegiate career helped him get drafted in the fifth round of the NFL by the Chicago Bears in 2009. He was also picked by the Bears, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans. However, a medical condition ended his professional career early in 2010.
Marcus Freeman's coaching journey began when he was appointed as a graduate assistant for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2010. During the time of his appointment, he was a member of the coaching squad that assisted Ohio State in winning the Sugar Bowl. Freeman moved to Kent State and Purdue as the Linebackers Coach. He became the Co-Defensive Coordinator and the linebacker coach for Purdue in 2016. He later became the Defensive Coordinator and the linebacker coach for Cincinnati. Before becoming the head coach for Notre Dame, he was the Defensive Coordinator and the linebacker coach in 2021. As the head coach, Freeman led Notre Dame to a 9-4 record in 2022 and a 10-3 record in 2023. In 2023, Freeman added two unanimous All-American players to the roster, the offensive lineman Joe Alt and the safety Xavier Watt, which was the first time since 1990.
