Mouhamet Diouf led Italy with 14 points and seven rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting. Giampaolo Ricci added 11 points and five rebounds, while Saliou Niang finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench. Simone Fontecchio chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
Santi Aldama led Spain with 19 points, 10 rebounds and four assists on 6-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range. Sergio De Larrea added 15 points and seven rebounds on 4-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Italy improved to 3-1, while Spain dropped to 2-2. Entering Tuesday, Italy, ranked No. 14 in the world, had already secured a spot in the Round of 16 in Riga, Latvia. According to FIBA, Spain, the world No. 5, would have qualified for the next round with a win.

After losing its EuroBasket opener 75-66 against Greece, Italy won back-to-back games against Georgia (78-62) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (96-79). Spain opened with an 83-69 loss to Georgia, then beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 88-67 and Cyprus 91-47.

Spain scored the first 13 points of the game and led 18-10 after the opening quarter. Italy outscored Spain 20-18 in the second quarter to trim the deficit to 36-30 at halftime.
Sergio De Larrea led Spain in the first half with 10 points and four rebounds on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. Aldama added nine points, five rebounds and three assists on 4-of-6 shooting.
Saliou Niang led Italy with eight points and four rebounds on 4-of-4 shooting in the first half. Darius Thompson added five points off the bench.
Italy outscored Spain 19-11 in the third quarter to take a 49-47 lead into the final frame.
Down the stretch, Aldama’s 3-pointer tied the game at 62 with two minutes left. De Larrea’s free throw put Spain up by one, but Marco Spissu knocked down two free throws to give Italy a 64-63 lead with about 30 seconds remaining.
On the following play, Spain’s Willy Hernangomez missed a jumper. Spissu added two more free throws to extend Italy’s lead to 66-63 with 14 seconds on the clock. Italy held on for its third straight win.
Spain will close group play Thursday against Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece. Italy will face host Cyprus on Wednesday.
