He was picked with the 13th overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets and later traded to the Utah Jazz before the regular season. He averaged 20.5 points, 1.5 steals, 3.7 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game in his rookie year and was part of the NBA All-Rookie First team. He was given the nickname "Spida" by Al Taylor, due to his long wingspan which allowed him to perform steals and dunks according to the Akron Beacon Journal. He is a six-time NBA All-Star and also won the NBA Slam Dunk contest in 2018. Mitchell began his collegiate basketball for the University of Louisville and averaged 15.6 points, 2.7 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game in his second year and later declared for the 2017 NBA Draft.
