The three-time MVP started for the Dodgers in the series finale, but felt discomfort in the fourth inning and was tended to by head athletic trainer Thomas Albert and interpreter Will Ireton.

He left the game with the trainer, ending his seventh start of the season prematurely. Ohtani returned to the dugout after visiting the clubhouse. The Dodgers said cramps were the reason for Ohtani's exit after three innings. The Japanese confirmed this after the game.

Ohtani exited after throwing six consecutive balls that included two wild pitches. He struck out four of the 15 hitters he faced on the night, conceding two earned runs with five hits and two walks.

While his pitching was cut short in the fourth inning, the reigning NL MVP returned to the plate in the sixth inning to resume his role as a designated hitter. He struck out looking, going 0-for-5 on the night as the Dodgers lost 5-2 in the series finale.

Following the game, Shohei Ohtani confirmed he had been suffering from cramps and had tried to work around it. Despite his early exit, Ohtani was pleased with his pitch count, going into the fourth inning for the first time since his return to the mound this year.

"The good thing about today's outing is my pitch count was where I wanted it to be," Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton. "This is a step forward. I didn't really feel great, to be honest, physically, the last couple days."

While cramps restricted his pitching, the Japanese two-way phenom faced no difficulties at the plate.

"I don't play defense. I think that helped," Ohtani said. "But also at the same time, we were playing a close game so I wanted to help the team win."

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the humidity in Cincinnati contributed to Ohtani's physical struggles.

"In the moment, very concerning, because I didn't know what it was," Roberts said. "Even when he went out, he said it was his hip. But when you hear cramping, then I feel much better. And talked to him, and he said it was the humidity. So I feel better knowing that.”

The Dodgers manager is confident Ohtani will be ready to start next week against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodger Stadium.
